According to Wikipedia…
“Eating your own dog food, also called dogfooding, is when a company (usually, a software company) uses the products that it makes.”
In Steve Levy’s recent article in Wired magazine on the topic of Google’s soon-to-be-released social networking platform (Google Plus), he adds to the idea of ‘eating your own dog food’ by saying – “it’s an exercise that presumably improves canine cuisine.”
Translation: Using your own product or service spotlights areas of needed improvement and shows you the path to making your product or service even better.
If you’re an astute chiropractor, you should see possible applications of ‘dogfooding’ within your own practice.
For example:
“Mystery shopping” your practice, by having someone call your office for more information, and recording it (or doing it yourself), is a great way to expose areas of needed improvement with your staff’s telephone skills and presentation.
Using your website, and going through the entire “Request an appointment” process, is another way of ‘dogfooding’.
The main idea here is that things that get measured almost always see greater improvements.
Certain things in your practice can be measured with metrics. Others need to be experienced first hand.
‘Eating your own dog food’ or ‘dogfooding’ for the chiropractor is experiencing things in your own practice, firsthand, in an effort to identify areas for improvement.
So, a couple of questions for you to ponder:
What activities, tasks, systems, or processes are occurring in your practice that, if improved, could lead to greater call conversions, patient acquisition, retention, referral generation, or overall patient experience?
Can these be measured with metrics?
If not, when can you go about ‘dogfooding’ them?
[Author note: I'm a big lover of dogs. Had one when I was a kid growing up in New Jersey. Had three when we moved to Florida a few years ago. The last remaining pooch in the house, Alizaya my 16 year old fawn red, female American Staffordshire Terrier, is a bit spoiled. She seems to have a better quality diet than I do, eating Rachel Rae's gourmet dog food every day, and refusing anything of lower quality. Sheesh!]
